Alberto Antuna has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Gazelles of Uganda after 10 months of service.

The announcement came as a surprise to many, especially after Antuna's successful tenure with the team.

In a farewell message that he posted on his official X account, the Spanish shared his heartfelt sentiments and said, "It's time to say goodbye.”

"Being part of 'The Gazelles' in such a short span has deeply enriched my experience as a coach; we made history together. I am sure it's not goodbye, but until next time, UG," he added.

Antuna took up the mantle as the Gazelles' head coach in January 2023. Under his leadership, the team secured a second-place finish in the FIBA Zone V Afrobasket 2023 qualifiers, narrowly losing the final 64-74 to Egypt.

Although the Gazelles only entered the Afrobasket tournament through a wild card, their performance was nothing short of impressive.

They secured victories against notable teams, including the eleven-time African champions Senegal, as well as DR. Congo and Guinea. Their journey in the competition ended in the quarterfinal after losing to Rwanda.

Securing three wins in the Afrobasket and achieving a seventh-place finish marked a significant milestone for the Gazelles. FUBA has already started the search of a worthy successor to Antuna.
