Editor,

I would like to refer to the question posed to the counselor on Thursday 22, 2015, where Gerald was worried about his sister dating a crack head. To Gerald, I understand his concern and as an elder brother it is his role to try and show his sister the bright side.

My advice to Gerald is that although he might think that by telling the parents he is putting himself at the risk of damaging his relationship with the sister, he should understand that it would be disastrous if he just stood by and watched someone else spoil his sister’s life.

Anyone who might find themselves in such a situation, the first thing is to sit and talk to someone. Most times such men are after money and when they realise that they’ve wasted your life, they will disappear.

I have never gone through such a thing but I can only imagine the other dangers she might encounter like, violence, sexual assault or even death. Advise your sister to take him to an alcoholic and narcotics anonymous group in town, with a few searches on the internet, I’m sure you can find out where the group meets. And lastly, young ladies should be on the lookout for such men whose sole purpose is to use them and spoil their future.
