Nullifying all construction permits is simply wrong

Editor, Refer to the story, “Gasabo recalls construction permits over fraud spotlight” (The New Times, January 20). Ordinary people should not be punished for the laziness of the officials. Why this sweeping move? Do they care about those who acquired the construction permits legally and through the proper channels? Do they have to suffer because of those who went about it illegally?

Editor,

Refer to the story, "Gasabo recalls construction permits over fraud spotlight” (The New Times, January 20).  Ordinary people should not be punished for the laziness of the officials. Why this sweeping move? Do they care about those who acquired the construction permits legally and through the proper channels? Do they have to suffer because of those who went about it illegally?

To Gasabo officials, rather than take such a general decision, should do your work by screening those suspected to have been acquired illegally. Otherwise, the decision will affect even those acquired the documents lawfully.

What the district authorities are doing is looking for the easiest way to solve their own mess. Imagine if the immigration department decided to cancel all Rwandan passports because we have some football players who got them illegally!

Instead, Gasabo District officials should conduct a field visit and find out who has illegal permit and only cancel those that are found to be ‘illegal’. I wonder why no one in the media or Parliament has taken this matter seriously.

We should not always wait for issues to reach the President before they are resolved.

This is yet another scandal by Gasabo District! Last time the poor voters were told to return their land documents to the district claiming that they were wrongfully given by government officials yet the land belonged to other individuals...
