As the search for Miss Rwanda 2015 continues, on Saturday the Southern Province picked its own beauty queens to represent it as organisers and the press descended on Huye town.
The region had 15 girls registered but only six appeared for the event which was held at Credo Hotel. But at the end of the day only four managed to pass through the judges’ sieve.
After public criticism of the height measuring style, the organisers came up with a new procedure which saw the measuring tape pinned on the wall with the required height marked.Whoever failed to reach the 1.7 metre mark could not progress.
Divine Ingabire was the overall winner, followed by Joella Giriwanyu Ruzigana, Joana Bagwire Kezaa and Belinda Mukunde.
20-year-old Daniella Nkurunziza failed to impress the judges to secure a ticket to appear in the next stage. This meant that only four girls were picked instead of five.
Nkurunziza, a teacher at Bright Angels in Nyarutarama was not fazed despite failing to impress.
"My dream has always been to be Miss Rwanda and it hasn’t ended now, I will continue trying,” she told The New Times.
The southern province will be represented by four beauty queens instead of the required five per province.
The guest of honor –the head of culture at the Ministry of Sports and Culture (MINISPOC), Lauren Makuza – said that the selected four girls had both the beauty and the brains that a Miss Rwanda requires.
He observed that the region has so far produced two girls who went on to become Miss Rwanda.
"The first Miss Rwanda in 2009 was from the Southern Province. There was also another one, so don’t be surprised if one these girls is crowned Miss Rwanda,” he said.
21-year-old Ingabire says that if she becomes Miss Rwanda, she will work with government on all programmes that involve helping the girl child.
"I’ll also export our culture because I think Rwanda isn’t only the best country in the world but has the best culture as well,” she said
On Sunday, the Miss Rwanda caravan headed to Eastern Province.
