Know your rights, is a child friendly space that has always helped children get to know and put into practice their rights.

To take you back slightly, last Tuesday we talked about drugs and their side effects towards the wayward young people using them.

To those who have always read this column, let me hope that you passed the advice to other friends fond of taking drugs.

In today’s topic we are going to see the duties children have to perform while at home. Like adults, children also have a right to help their parents at home, with daily chores.

Children have a right to lend a hand to their parents or maids at home while they working. Children can help in cleaning the house, plates, washing some clothes and sweeping the compound to mention but a few.

However it is not right for a child to do something that is not equivalent to his or her strength. All the duties children perform at home should be equivalent to their strength.

For example; when fetching some water, it is your right to be given a smaller jerrycan to carry. Heavy loads are harmful to your health. If a child carries heavy loads, he or she can develop chest pain, develop retarded growth and constant head aches.

Children do not have duties at home only; from today onwards, you also have to know that you have other national duties.

As a child, you have to work hard so as to become a good citizen. Children have a right to education; it is a universal right all children must enjoy what ever their background – rich or poor.

By achieving those great dreams of becoming good lawyers, doctors, teachers, pilots, great business men and women you would be good citizens of Rwanda. There are serve the nation.

So as I conclude let me believe that you have all known that a good child is the one whohelps people at home. Helping your parents or the maids at home with some domestic work is not a crime but a good discipline every child should have.
