Reference is made to the article, "Milestones and challenges that dominated Rwanda’s aviation industry in 2014” (The New Times, January 6).

This is a perfect review of a great year; thank you The New Times for compiling such a great story.

The Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA) sought the assistance of Changi Airports International. The Asian firm reviewed the airport’s operations and made recommendations on improvements that will increase the capacity of the airport.

Whilst Singapore Changi Airport got awarded best airport in the world for 2014, as the result of this strategic choice, Kigali International Airport was ranked the best in East Africa, according to the non-biased survey by Skytrax.

With rapidly growing passenger traffic, Kigali could be listed among the 30 busiest airports in Africa.

There is no doubt that we have vividly seen the leaps and bounds of Rwanda’s aviation industry. Compared to five years ago, flight frequencies have more than tripled with internationally acclaimed airlines making Rwanda a preferred destination and pushed the Government to revise projections and thus the completed upgrade of Kigali International Airport expansion and Bugesera International Airport in the pipeline.

Domestic frequencies have also doubled hence the planned upgrade of Gisenyi and Kamembe airports located upcountry. The latter is expected to facilitate as well as boost tourism.

With new destinations by RwandAir and new airlines continuing to make entry, Rwandans are being given numerous market options as economic relations between Rwanda and other states grow ever stronger. With increasing airline options, this also brings into perspective competitive travel fares.

As we expect a steady and continued soaring trend of Rwanda’s aviation sector, Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA) is aware that the reliability and efficiency of safety, security and service provision are key players to ensure that growth is maintained.
