UR finishes 22nd at regional varsity games

The University of Rwanda finished 22nd at the just concluded 9th East Africa University Games held at Uganda Christian University in Mukono.

The five-day event attracted 47 universities from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zanzibar.

UR-Huye Campus amassed four medals including one gold, one silver and two bronze all from karate despite competing in athletics, basketball, football, handball, karate and volleyball.

Jean d’Amour Rukundo clinched gold in the men’s under 84 kg Kumite (fighting) category while Narcisse Tuyishime bagged silver in the men’s under 60 category and Jules Rutayisire took bronze in the men’s under 75 kg category.

Ndejje University of Uganda successfully defended their regional title after they collected 98 medals -34 gold, 28 silver and 36 bronze to fend off competition from runners-up Kampala International University which managed 58 medals - 32 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze.

Ndejje picked gold in athletics (9), woodball (9), and badminton (4), swimming (4), taekwondo (3), table tennis (2), darts (2) and karate (1).

Hosts UCU were third with 42 medals - 13 gold, 15 silver and 14 bronze while Kenyatta University were the highest ranking institution from outside Uganda with 49 medals - 12 gold, 18 silver and 19 bronze.

Mount Kenya University – Kigali campus was the other representative from Rwanda and finished a distant 39th with no medal to show after the four-day multi-sport competition.

They only participated in the men’s volleyball event that was won by Nkumba University of Uganda.

Six-time record winners Makerere University finished a disappointing seventh with seven gold, nine silver and 11 bronze medals.

This was the first time that a private university hosted the biennial event which attracted over 5000 participants competing in 18 sporting disciplines including athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, darts, football, handball, hockey, karate, lawn tennis, netball, rugby, scrabble, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, volleyball and woodball.
