Schools must take lead in promoting Rwandan values

Editor,

I don’t think it would require extra-ordinary capability to promote the Rwandan traditional culture, and have it valued along and on the same footing as all other influences we borrow from other cultural sources around the world.

It simply requires a change in mindset of each of us, either lucidly and voluntarily.

Just imagine what could be achieved if the Ministry of Education would make room, in all levels of school curricula, let’s say every Friday afternoon (the same way civil servants are presently granted time for sports activities), for few minutes of traditional cultural performances.

I know of one (private) school in Muhanga District that already does that...certainly with a long-lasting effect into those kids’ minds, bodies and behaviour.

And no doubt the Rwandan society in a few decades ahead will be more balanced, lively and firm than ours that’s now sinking into blind and sickening consumerism of everything Western.
