Three people were arrested last week in Kayonza District over attempting to bribe a police officer.

Investigations indicate that the officer apprehended them as they tried to bribe him after he intercepted them for transporting charcoal without an authorisation normally issued by the district administration to indicate that no environment damage was done while producing the charcoal.

The Eastern Region Police spokesperson, IP Emmanuel Kayigi, said when the charcoal owners failed to produce the licence, they raised Rwf20,000 as a bribe, which they passed on to the officer, expecting him to give them the green light.

The officer immediately arrested them and they are currently detained at Mukarange Police Station as investigations continue.

Kayigi urged the public to report incidences of bribery as well as unlawful commercial dealings to Police.
