GICUMBI — Police in Byumba has arrested a man who allegedly hacked his spouse to death Jean Damascene Ndolimana, 30, of Kageyo Sector in Gicumbi district allegedly killed Anosiata Bazauoagira, a widow with whom they have been staying, on Monday night.

According to police, the deceased had lived with her alleged killer for some time until the fateful day. The couple, police explained, picked a quarrel in a local bar while drinking local brew commonly called "Ikigaje.” He hit the deceased‘s head using a hoe shortly after reaching their home and fled thereafter.

The district Police Commander, Superintendent Albert Ndatsikira said the suspect was arrested with the help of local leaders and village community policing officials.

"Ndolimana fled after committing this bloody act until he was arrested this Wednesday in Gatsibo district,” said the police chief.

Police said the deceased’s body was taken to Byumba Hospital for postmortem and later buried at her residence in Horezo Cell on Wednesday.

The suspect would be charged with murder, according to police. Murder carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment on conviction.
