Improving neonatal care does not need huge projects or expenses. The first step is for qualified nurses to implement proven nursing practices and this includes kangaroo care.

Nurses who care enough about the babies to follow the nursing care plans and use checklists make a big difference. However, the care of mothers and their involvement is of course vital.

Trained medical staff who give continuity of care should be available 24 hours and they should understand the importance of following research based practices as a major contributing factor.  Sadly not all these basic elements are the norm in some local district hospitals.
