The Police are holding three suspects in connection with the theft of a vehicle from the neighbouring DR Congo.

The car, belonging to the National Commission for Refugees (NCR) in Goma, DR Congo, was set to be sold on the black market in Rwanda at Rwf34 million.

The trio, identified as Jean de la Croix Nzayisenga, Africa Furaha and Amri Uwihoreye, was arrested last Friday at the Union Trade Centre (UTC) in Kigali.

The vehicle was on Thursday handed over to Saul Ruhanika, an employee of NCR in Goma, who commended RNP for helping to recover the car.

Nzayisenga, a Congolese national, also the driver of the stolen vehicle, is suspected of having connived with Uwihoreye, a Rwandan taxi driver in Kigali to find a buyer for the stolen vehicle.

However, the potential buyer became suspicious and asked them to send him pictures of the car.

When he noticed that the car belonged to NCR, he tipped Police which followed up and arrested the suspects.

The purported buyer, who preferred  anonymity, tricked the suspects to drive all the way from Goma to Kigali where they were unexpectedly arrested.

The suspects confessed to the crime and begged to be pardoned. Nzayisenga, the prime suspect, narrated how he planned to sell the car because he had become bankrupt.

The trio is currently detained at Muhima Police station pending investigation.

Chief Superintendent Celestin Twahirwa, the RNP spokesperson, commended the citizen who availed Police with credible information that led to the arrest of the trio.

CSP Twahirwa said Police had embarked on fighting cross-border crimes by sharing information on suspects with regional Police organs.

He called for more cooperation to ensure criminal activities are prevented in the country.

"After the car went missing on Friday last week, we searched for it in vain. I called Police in Rubavu inquiring if they had seen the car. Police in Rwanda responded saying they would do everything possible to find the car,” Ruhanika narrated.

"I had lost hope of finding the car, but I was surprised when I received news that it had been recovered and that Rwanda National Police had also arrested the suspects. I really commend  the great work Police has done,” Ruhanika said.
