Erick Birasa is the face behind the popular fashion house, Ian Boutique, situated at Kigali City Market. The boutique that is named after his son has changed the image of fashion in Rwanda. He’s the most sought after fashion designer by local celebrities, beauty queens and models. He also handles weddings and other corporate events. He spoke to Society Magazine’s Stephen Kalimba and Erina Kelly Nyiraneza about his fashion style.

What is your style like?

I would say that it is casual smart. I like jeans and I can pair them with a long sleeved shirt or t-shirt and add a sweater or a suit coat depending on the weather or activities that I have to do. Overall, I like jeans a lot. I put on suits on Sundaywhen I go to church.

What’s your favourite brand of suits?

I like suits from Turkey, there are many brands but Gioberti suits are my favourite.

What type of suit would you suggest for someone tall?

Well average people can fit well into suits that are Drop 6, which is the difference between the jacket and trouser measurement but for a tall person, I would suggest they try out a Drop 8 because it fits well people with athletic figures and it has long sleeves.

What’s your favourite footwear?

Well, I have a thing for suede shoes. They are comfortable and I move around easily in them. I also like Moccasins. They match well with jeans.

What changes have you seen in dress codes at weddings over the years?

Before, people would hire suits, they would buy or get tailored suits that were either over size or didn’t look good. I once saw international rapper P Diddy in a nice suit; I bought the same suit, took a picture in it and posted it on my Facebook page beside Diddy’s picture. When people saw it, they started coming for suits. These days when celebrities like Kim Kadarshian put on a wedding dress, we try to bring it so the ladies can check it out.

Do you own a wallet?

Yes, I do! But I don’t like to move around with it. I leave it in one place because I don’t like sitting on it, it can mess you up.Besides,I prefer my pockets light.

What fashion tips do you have?

I think what you wear should depend on what day it is, but I suggest that people come to me for expert advice so I can show them what looks good on them.I have that gift; I can tell anybody what looks good on them.
