2008 Utexrwa Cup

Challengers 142 all out

KCC 145/4

KCC won by 6 wickets

Utexrwa Cup champions Challengers opened their title defense in cowardly fashion after Sunday’s six-wicket defeat against Kigali Cricket Club at Kicukiro.

Despite an individual effort of 59 runs including nine boundaries and a six from skipper Srinath Vardhineni, Challengers were bowled out for a paltry 143 in just 24 overs.

Ayaz Khan and Mohammad Jasat masterminded KCC’s bowling attack after picking five wickets between themselves.

Needing less than three runs from an over, the record four-time Sulfo league champions lost four wickets before sailing home.

KCC’s all-rounder and skipper Jasat Mehboob led the assault with a quick knock of 47.

Ayaz Khan, the 2008 Sulfo league top batsman added 27 to jointly guide the club to their first win of the Cup and hand them a strong start. After the defeat, Vardhineni blamed his side’s poor batting.

"We did not click with the bat. We lost wickets in quick succession and that put us under a lot of pressure,” he conceded. Meanwhile, Mehboob credited his side for the win.

"The bowlers were fantastic. They bowled in the right places and this made it very easy for the batsmen to chase down the score,” he said.
