Reigning Miss Rwanda, Colombe Akiwacu, lives on the lucky side of life when it comes to fashion. Designers are tripping over each other just to get her to wear their designs for various functions.

The beauty queen spoke to Society Magazine’s Doreen Umutesi about the joy that comes with shopping as opposed to simply having things handed to her.

How would you describe your dress sense?

Colombe Akiwacu

I’m more comfortable in casual wear especially a short and funky kind of dress. But for ceremonies, I choose an outfit that perfectly suits the event.

What’s your favourite clothing item?

Currently, my favourite clothing item is a short dress. I used put on trousers and shorts for the greatest part of my past life. I was kind of a tomboy but i have since outgrown that. I fell in love with short dresses.

Where do you shop for clothes?

I enjoy shopping. I used to mostly shop at Dolce Vita, a shop that was located at Kigali City Tower but shifted. When I plan to go shopping, I will definitely call them to find out where they moved to.

I also get a few offers for clothes from designers for events or ceremonies but in most cases I always have to return them.

What do you consider when shopping clothes?

I always consider comfort above anything else. The outfit should flatter my body shape and skin complexion. Things like colour and quality come in later after I have tried on the outfit.

What is your favourite fashion accessory?

Jewelry is my favourite fashion accessory because it adds something to one’s outfit.

What is your favourite clothing item on a guy?

Most guys look good in a nice pair of jeans with a casual shirt and casual classy shoes.

What’s your favourite scent?

Eau Jeune perfume is my favourite scent because it’s not too strong.

What is the most expensive fashion accessory that you own?

I have a pair of shoes that I bought in New York. I fell in love with them the moment I set eyes on them and there was no way I was going to come back home without them. I do not wish to reveal the price. (laughs).

Any fashion advice?

Fashion is a choice. You can wear whatever you feel comfortable in but it should not offend other people. For instance dressing up in an outfit that is revealing like an extremely short skirt is kind of offensive.
