Tigo Rwanda’s voice and mobile services segment has been nominated for the 2014 AfriCom Awards in the best network improvement category.

Tigo is competing for the award with seven other firms, including Bharti Airtel and Liquid Telecom.

However, Bharti Airtel and Internet service provider, Liquid Telecom, dominated the nominations, with Airtel being shortlisted in seven of 13 categories, while Liquid got four nods for seventh edition of the awards, a statement from organisers indicates.

Airtel was nominated in the best app category for its Internet.org app, best mobile money solution for its airtel money, network improvement and the changing lives category for its Ebola initiative, among others.

MTN was nominated in the best marketing campaign category for its MTN corporate campaign and in the pan-African initiative category for its Global MPLS VPN.

Millicom, Tigo’s parent company, got a nod for improving its voice and data segment in the best marketing campaign category for free Facebook in Swahili in Tanzania and most innovative service for facilitating international mobile money transfers for its Tigo Pesa in Tanzania.

Liquid Telecom was nominated for the best app for Africa and best connectivity solutions for Africa categories; best pan-Africa initiative for its East Africa fibre ring and best network improvement for upgrading and improving the fibre network of Liquid Telecom Kenya.

Other nominees include Orange Telecom, Sky Vision, Safaricom, Huawei, Fairwaves and Digital.
