University of Rwanda (UR)-Huye campus and the Rwanda National Police Karate teams emerged winners in the Kumite (fighting) and Kata team categories respectively in a friendly competition held in Rubavu at the weekend. The Huye campus team captain Eliya Nsengimana, said their "objective was well accomplished" and they will now focus on the national inter-college tournament as well as the East African inter-university games to be held in Kampala, Uganda on December 15.

"The date is not yet fixed but this national inter-colleges competition will determine which players go for the East African inter-university games. Nonetheless, we will be ready for those games too," Nsengimana said.

The one-day tournament at the weekend brought together five local Karate clubs and two from the DR Congo town of Goma. The local clubs included; APR, Police, UR-Huye campus, and two Rubavu-based clubs including Zen Karate-Do. The Congolese sides were Lion and Delta Force.

The competition's theme was fighting drug abuse among the youth. Sylvestre Twajamahoro, team captain of the Police Kata team, said he was also happy many youths were present and a message was driven home.

In the team Kumite category, Zen Karate-Do emerged second, APR third and Delta Force fourth. In team Kata, Delta force was second while Zen Karate-Do was third.
