Four athletes gear up for Dar Rotary half marathon

FOUR RWANDAN athletes are ready to go for honours at this year’s edition of the Tanzania Rotary Dar Marathon 2014 slated for October 14 in Dar es Salaam. 

The four athletes named for the marathon include; Eric Sebahire, Felicien Sebahire and Potien Ntawuyirushintege in the men’s category and Clementine Mukandanga, the only female athlete representing Rwanda. 

Speaking to Times Sport yesterday, Rwanda Athletics Federation Technical Director Jean Pierre Ndacyayisenga said that athletes have had fine preparations and are in good shape to vie for medals. 

"With the experience gained in the Commonwealth games a few months ago, plus the preparations they have had for over a month, our athletes are in shape to win medals in next week’s marathon,” added Ndacyayisenga. 

The event is to take place on Tuesday October 14 (Nyerere Day) at the Green on Kenyatta Drive Oysterbay will be flagged off by former President of the United Republic of Tanzania Mzee Ali Hassan Mwinyi. 

This year there will be four categories to compete in including 21.1 kilometres, a 21.1 kilometre cycling race which starts at 6:00am, nine kilometres and a family fun walk of five kilometres starting at 7:00 am. 

The half marathon has attracted elite runners from Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Malawi due to the increased prize money in both the male and female half marathon categories. 

The organisers of the Tanzania Dar Rotary half marathon will pay for air tickets and accommodation and have staked Tshs 6m (Rwf.2.4m) for the top three winners.
