At the recently concluded Rwanda Day in Atlanta, fashion designer Francis Zahabu impressed the Diaspora with an exhibition of locally made fashion designs. His designs are a blend of Kitenge and ordinary fabric which gives a wide range of options on how and when to wear the designs. The designs exhibited can be worn to parties, office, dinners and weddings. However, the icing on the cake was his remake of the beautiful traditional piece, the mushanana.

It is a unique mix of a casual shirt worn under an over the shoulder shawl-like piece and silk made baggy Capri pants. The over the shoulder shawl-like piece can also be worn over a long satin or silk dress.

The modern mushanana is just as elegant as the traditonal dress. Even better, it can be worn on a fancy evening out.

The mushanana design is easy to wear and is ideal for today’s youth with a modern sense of style yet still in touch with tradition. Former Miss France, Sonia Rolland, news anchor Leoncie Kanzayire, traditional singer Intore Massamba, RnB songbird Knowless Butera and Dream Boys, among others, have been spotted wearing the increasingly popular trend.
