The Council of Ministers took note of the Command Post Exercise (CPX) planned for November 2008 that will be followed by the Field Training Exercise (FTX) next year.
"The CPX 2008 will give the region the initial operating capability,” the Ministers’ communiqué copied to The New Times, reads in part.
The Council of Ministers further expressed confidence that the ‘East African Standby Brigade (EASBRIG) was on the right course and is moving towards establishment of collective capacity for conflict prevention, management and resolution’.
The meeting was attended by the Ministers of Defence and Security of Rwanda, Burundi, the Union of Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, the Transitional Federal Republic of Somalia, and Uganda. The Republic of Seychelles and Sudan were also represented. The meeting was also attended by representatives from the African Union.
The Council of Ministers’ meeting was opened by Rwanda’s Prime Minister, Bernard Makuza. It was preceded by the meeting of the Eastern Africa Chiefs of Defence Staff (EACDS).
