As facilities that promote a cashless economy become more accessible across the country, telecoms have jumped at the opportunity to woo subscribers to use their mobile money services. This has seen them announce huge discounts for users or scrapped transactional fees.

Tigo Rwanda is the latest to join the scramble for subscribers through its new campaign dubbed, ‘Tigocashinga’. According to Daniel Barrientos, the head of mobile financial services at Tigo Rwanda, the drive is aimed at wooing more Rwandans to use electronic payment facilities offered by the firm.

"The campaign underscores our commitment to increasing financial inclusion and contribute to a cashless society,” he said.

The one-month drive will see lucky customers win Rwf100,000 daily, whenever they send money, pay bills or buy items using TigoCash.

Early this year, MTN Rwanda waived off user fees for its Mobile Money service clients sending money of up to Rwf75,000, while Airtel recently scrapped all user charges for its airtel money subscribers. Experts say telecoms use such drives to attract more mobile money clients.
