Police in Huye district are holding a man of Somali origin for allegedly attempting to bribe Police officer.

According to police, Jamal Osman Bobele 59, was arrested on September 17, after he tried to bribe an officer with Rwf150,000 to give him back a driving license that had been confiscated from a fellow Somali native Ibrahim Abdullah, 48. At around 10am on September 15, Bobele met the officer in the latter’s office and tried to induce him with the bribe on behalf of his compatriot. The officer denied the bribe and informed Judicial Police Officer who arrested the culprit. Ibrahim had on September 3, in Rusatira sector; while driving a Kenyan registered truck, deviated from his lane, knocked a saloon car, an accident in which two people were injured. The suspect is held at Ngoma Police Station for further investigations. Chief Supt. of Police Hubert Gashagaza, the Spokesperson for the Southern Region said, "the officer acted professionally and this practice is in line with the force's culture regarding zero tolerance stance to corruption."

He appealed to drivers and the general public against such illegal acts saying corruption has negative effects on the economy. He reminded the public that prevention and fight against all sorts of corruption should not be left to Police and other concerned organs alone, instead everybody's responsibility to have a free-corrupt society. The patients injured in the accident are still admitted at University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK).
