Editor,

Reference is made to the story, "Exploring the new curriculum” (Education Times, August 26). The one most fundamental truth about education reform worldwide is that any new initiative must be supported by adequate financial resources. If that is not the case, any reform is due to fail.

It is also unfair to expect teachers to implement reforms without appropriate support. Thus it is imperative that any new programme is allocated funds in the national budget.

This is timely given the gains the Rwandan education system has made over the years. It is clear that enrolment rates for both boys and girls have increased by far than in any other sub-Saharan country.

The question now is to know whether children are learning, and whether what they are learning is relevant to Rwandan development goals – at national, local and individual levels.

Learning is the main reason why parents send their children to school and it is the only measurable substance of ensuring quality basic education.

It is important that the new curriculum promotes transformative learning, while also ensuring that children are at the heart of the entire processes.

Kudos to Rwanda educationists for coming this far!
