Ruterana makes cut, eyes top ten finish

RWANDA’S professional golfer Emmanuel Ruterana has his eyes set on the top ten finish after making the cut on Thursday in the Uganda Golf Open which winds up today at Kitante golf course in Kampala.

Ruterana had a poor start in the first round on Wednesday after scoring 75 but recovered to make a total gross score of 150 after scoring another 75 on day two. His compatriot Ernest Ndayisenga failed to make the cut.

"The start was not easy because of the course which is muddy. It was simply not easy for all of us but I am thankful to have made the cut,” Ruterana told Saturday Sport yesterday.

"I will now put more effort to ensure that I finish in the top ten and take a share of the prize money,” he added.

Uganda’s Deo Akope is favourite to win the professional category title as he was in lead on day two standings by press time. He sunk 4 birdies to score 69 and led day two of the pros (139 total over 36 holes).

Uganda’s Denis Anguyo and Kenya’s David Odhiambo are the other pro golfers in the top three.Some of the big names to miss the cut include; Uganda’s Amos Kamya, Kenya’s Anil Shah, South Africa’s Allan Michelle, Dickson Lagoro, George Olayo, Ian Odokonyero and Herman Mutawe.

Meanwhile, in the amateur category, Rwanda’s Steven Katwiremu will live to cherish the 72nd edition of the Tusker Malt Uganda Golf Open as his name will be engraved in the history books for being one of those players to have sunk a hole in one on Thursday.

Katwiremu achieved this on hole 4 using 8 iron ball pinnacle. He was playing alongside Fabian Rwalinda, Kostic Nemanja and Patrick Mwaka.
