Police in Nyamagabe District have arrested a man suspected of killing his own mother over an alleged longstanding debt.

The incident took place on Wednesday in Karambo Cell, Kibirizi Sector, Nyamagabe.

The suspect, according to police, hit his mother three times on the head using a hoe after she failed to raise Rwf200,000 she reportedly owed him.

The victim was rushed to Kigeme Hospital but died on the way.

The suspect is being detained at Gasaka Police Station pending further investigations.

Police say their initial investigations indicate that the suspect is a drug addict and had previously attacked his parents at their home after smoking marijuana.

The Southern Province Police Spokesperson, CSP Hubert Gashagaza, condemned the act and warned residents  to desist from taking the law into their hands.

Gashagaza also urged grassroots leaders to act fast and resolve family conflicts before they lead to loss of life.

Louis Karenzi, the Executive Secretary of Karambo Cell, urged residents to share information with security organs to ensure such crimes are prevented.

Karenzi also appealed to residents to strengthen night patrols and embrace the neighborhood watch arrangement.
