Rwanda will temporarily lead Zone 5 of the Union of African Karate Federations (UFAK) following a decision by the executive committee of the continental body, on August 15, in the Senegalese capital, Dakar.

The continental committee observed that there had been an absence of statutory activities over the last 4 years in UFAK Zone 5, and repeated failure of the sitting UFAK Zone 5 committee to organise any activities in the Zone.

As such, an interim committee was set up to revive the Zone and organise formal elections. The interim executive committee is composed of Presidency: Rwanda; Vice Presidency: Egypt; and Secretariat: Kenya--all selected from Zone 5 countries present at the Dakar meeting.

"The interim Zone 5 Executive Committee will be meeting at its own discretion to plan and decide on activities as per UFAK calendar and regulations,” reads part of a statement signed by UFAK President, Mohamed Tahar Mesbahi.

Rwanda Karate Federation (Ferwaka) president Théogène Uwayo, who takes charge until the next elections are held within a year or so, told Times Sport that the development is important because it’s a recognition of the country’s ability to lead an African zone with powerhouses like  Egypt, Kenya and Ethiopia.

"This is recognition of our Karate’s progress in the past five years. They have enough confidence in us to put us in charge,” Uwayo said. 

"We are going to organise and ensure that all statutory trainings and competitions are held regularly—the Zone has been sleeping for quite long,” he added.

Zone 5 comprises 10 countries including; Rwanda, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Uganda, Tanzania, Egypt, Kenya, Ethiopia and Burundi. 

What is also significant for Zone 5 now is Egypt’s firm dedication to the zone. Egypt ranks number one in on the continent and fourth globally. 

Egypt brings a wealth of experience including; talent and financial muscle.
