Editor,

Refer to the story, "Scramble for 4G internet kicks off” (The New Times, August 25). This is yet another success story about Rwanda’s ICT progress. One can attribute this to many factors, the critical one being good governance and leadership.

In modern world, access to the internet permits socio-economic progress of the populace. An economy that puts in place the basic infrastructure and promotes business ventures to ensure wide use is on the right path to economic growth.

In Rwanda, one can assert that access to the internet and information technology is a key stimulant to economic growth. However, we should be mindful of the fact that this is a tiny cog in the wheel of economic growth and development.

With over 70 per cent of the population based in rural communities and depending on subsistence farming, ensuring access to electricity, water and sanitation, schools, modern agriculture, jobs…would harness the benefits of 4G/LTE and accelerate economic growth.

Having 4G/LTE is a step in the right direction; however, there is a lot to be done if its benefits are to be harvested.
