Beach V-ball team gets first win in Nanjing

Rwanda’s Lea Uwimbabazi and Seraphine Mukantambara earned the country its first victory at the ongoing Nanjing Youth Olympic Games in beach volleyball after beating Vanuatu 2-0 on Monday.

The pair had lost the opening match to Australia 2-0 on Sunday but recovered impressively, to beat the South Pacific Ocean Island nation 21-14, 21-19.

However, their male counterparts, Elias Ndagano and Sylvestre Ndayisabye, who lost their opener against Venezuela 2-0, suffered another blow when they lost their second game against the United States 2-0 (21-9, 21-16). By press time, the girls’ team was due to play against Pueto Rico, while the boys were up against Indonesia.

In cycling, Rwandan representative Benitha Uwamarayika finished in the 26th position out of 31 riders in the 3.86km Time Trial race; she clocked seven minutes, four seconds and 50 microseconds (7’04”50).
