BEIJING-The 29th Beijing Olympic Games came to a climax yesterday with hosts China leading in the medals won during the two-week long competition.

China won 50 gold, 20 silver and 28 bronze medals respectively while second-placed USA won 35 gold, 37 silver and 36 bronze medals.

Russia came third after winning 23 gold, 21 silver and 28 bronze medals.

The 2012 Olympic Games hosts Great Britain produced one of their best outings in the Games after picking 19 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze medals.

African countries who earned medals at the showpiece included Zimbabwe, Kenya, Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia, Cameroon, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, Mauritius, Togo and Ethiopia. Meanwhile, Kenya’s Samuel Kamau Wanjiru set a new Olympic record of two hours and 6.32 minutes in the Men’s Marathon to wind up the Beijing Olympic Games with gold yesterday.
