Everything possible will be done to ensure that those responsible for the murder of  a mother and her five children in Byimana Sector in Ruhango District are apprehended and brought to justice, the Minister for Justice, Johntson Busingye, has said.

Busingye was addressing residents of Byimana sector on Thursday. He expressed condolences to the bereaved family,   saying that the nation was shocked by the gruesome murders.

Five people have so far been arrested in connection with the  tragedy.

"This is a heinous crime that we must all combat,” Busingye told the residents.

The bodies of Josephine Kankesha, a mother in her mid-forties, and her five children – three boys and two girls aged between four and 17 years– were found on the morning of Saturday, August 2, with deep cuts.

Police investigations found that the victims were hacked to death with sharp objects such as machetes.

In a statement released on August 3, Police Spokesperson ACP Damas Gatare, attributed the murders to land conflicts between family members.

Busingye called upon area residents and Rwandans, in general, to report any conflict or anything that may be harmful to their security, to help combat crime in the country.
