Three victims of the weekend shooting in Gicumbi District have undergone successful surgery at Central Teaching Hospital of Kigali (Chuk), medics said yesterday.

The operation was conducted on the chest and head to remove bullet fragments lodged in their bodies, according to medics.

"They were operated on Monday and they are yet to regain consciousness, but we hope by tomorrow (today) they will be able to communicate,” Dr Martin Ntundo, the acting director-general at Chuk, told The New Times.

However, Dr Ntundo also disclosed that a 15-year-old other victim who was also admitted to Chuk alongside the trio operated on, could not make it on reaching the hospital due to internal bleeing.

The medical director was uncomfortable sharing the identifies of the victims, but revealed that the one who was shot in the head is still in critical condition but that "chances are high that they will all be fine.”

Four people were killed and seven others sustained injuries at Hunters Sport, a night club in Gicumbi District, when Private Théogene Munyembabazi of the Rwanda Defence Forces ran amok and shot in the crowd after a quarrel over a woman, Flavia Kaitesi, who is among those killed.

Emile Nsengiyumva, Placide Niyigena, Munyembabazi and Asouman Murangira were the other victims of the shooting.

Munyembabazi was arrested after the shooting.

When The New Times visited Chuk, yesterday, the victims were said to be in intensive care unit. 

RDF condemned the incident, adding that Military Prosecution had started investigating the matter and once investigations are concluded, the suspect, would be court martialled.

The fight reportedly started after Kayitesi snubbed the soldier’s attempt to dance with her.

A scuffle ensued after the soldier slapped Kayitesi, sucking in other revellers who threw the soldier out.

It is said Munyembabazi ran to the camp, returning later to fire indiscriminately into the revellers.
