Youth Olympic Games team off to Nanjing

Team Rwanda departs for Nanjing, China today for this year’s Youth Olympic Games, slated from August 16-28.

Team Rwanda departs for Nanjing, China today for this year’s Youth Olympic Games, slated from August 16-28.

Rwanda will be represented by ten boys and five girls in four disciplines namely; swimming, athletics, beach volleyball and cycling.

Swimmer Abdul Rahman Gatete Babu will compete in 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle. The three runners include; Jean Marie Vianney Myasiro (3000m), James Sugira (1500m) and Venantie Mukandayisenga, (1500m), while coach Jean Pierre Ndacyayisenga is also part of the contingent.

Seraphine Mukantambara and Lea Uwimbabazi will compete in beach volleyball girls’ category while Elias Ndagano and Sylvestre Ndayisabye are in the boys’ contest. Their coach is Paul Bitok. 

Cycling has Clementine Niyonsaba and Benitha Uwamarayika with former Team Rwanda rider Jean De Dieu Rafiki as their trainer. The delegation is led by Elie Manirarora, while Herniette Umulisa is traveling as the team doctor.
