Support Africa’s manufacturing base

Editor,

Refer to Ricardo Hausmann’s article, "The real raw material of wealth” (The New Times, July 28). African leaders should start to think in a more creative way of being able to produce most of the products locally.

For instance, in Kenya we have coffee products but we import coffee as a finished product and at the same time we have sugar factories but we still get sugar dumping in the country making it difficult for local sugar companies to grow.

So I totally think people need to shift their way of thinking.

Kenya, and Africa at large, are more becoming consumers rather than producers which is ironical considering the majority of the population is poor and unemployed.
