A mother and her son have been detained in the southern district of Kamonyi in connection with the death of a man.

Police said the woman, in her mid-40s and her 18-year-old son (names withheld), were arrested on charges of conspiring to murder her husband, Emmanuel Hagumamasezerano.

The duo had been married for about 20 years and had five children, according to sources.

The incident occurred on Monday evening in the rural Rukoma Sector and the suspects who were arrested shortly after the murder were still being held at a local police station.

A third suspect, who also happens to be a son to the deceased, is on the run.

The Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Hubert Gashagaza, told The New Times that investigations into the gruesome murder are still ongoing.

However, it is suspected that the murder might have been a result of a longstanding family feud that had divided the family, sources said.

"Residents should always cooperate with the police by providing all information on families that are plagued by  wrangles in order to ensure that such horrendous crimes do not occur,” CSP Gashagaza appealed.

"The arrest of criminals after offenses are committed is not enough. We need to work together to prevent crimes before they are committed.”

He also called for establishment of anti-crime associations at the grassroots to ensure that information on anything that might harm people’s safety is shared in time.
