A driver of a passenger van belonging to Select Travel Agency last week heeded the call against drug abuse and drove to a police post in Ngoma District where he reported three passengers on board whom he suspected of trafficking cannabis.

The two men and a woman, names withheld, are currently detained at Kibungo Police station pending investigations.

Sylvere Mugabowindekwe  said some passengers on board smelt a pungent  odour of the illegal substances, which forced him to find out the source of the odour.

Each of the three suspects had stashed a chunk of the illicit drug in their luggage.

One of the suspects said they were transporting the drug to Kigali where they had ready buyers.

He also acknowledged that he knew the act was illegal and begged to be forgiven.

Senior Supt. (SSP), Bénoit  Nsengiyumva, Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province commended the driver and the passengers for the noble act and called upon the general public to emulate them.

He appealed to drivers especially of public vehicles to always be vigilant not to aid criminality by transporting wrongdoers and illegal luggage.
