Police in Kirehe District on Wednesday intercepted a Tanzanian-registered trailer (Scania T 608 BTY), carrying several tonnes of marijuana. The truck was intercepted in Nyabikora Cell along Rusumo-Kigali highway.

The truck driver has since been arrested together with two other men who were travelling in the  Kigali bound trailer.

"Our officers who were on highway patrol at around 9pm intercepted the truck after a tip off from a whistleblower…the drugs were concealed with other goods. One of the suspects is Rwandan while the rest are Tanzanians,” Kirehe District Police Commander (DPC), CIP Moses Gatare, said.

Drug trafficking is becoming common along the highway. Just a couple of days ago, another driver was arrested carrying over 200kg of marijuana.

Meanwhile, Kirehe mayor Protais Murayire warned the youth against drug abuse, saying it was responsible for most crimes in the communy.

He commended the police vigilance against the vice, adding that he would continue mobilising local leaders to rally behind the campaign.
