RWANDA’S RALLY driver Giancarlo Davite will need to have his car in good mechanical shape if he is to revive his chances of winning the Africa Rally Championship title when the Mountain Gorilla Rally gets underway tomorrow.

The Mt. Gorilla Rally, which is the fifth round of the Africa Rally Championship, is scheduled to be held in Rwanda from Friday to Sunday.

After crashing out of the Tanzania rally last month, Davite, the defending champion will be driving his favourite Subaru Impreza N12 commonly known as Umuletti to his fans.

Standing fourth with 27 points, a win for Davite this weekend would boost his chances of bouncing back in the quest for the ARC title with 52 points.

He will however face stiff competition from leaders Gary Chaynes (Cote d’Ivoire), Jaspreet Chatthe (Kenya) and Mohamed Essa (Zambia) who have all descended on Kigali for maximum points.

The 1999 African Rally Champion Charles Muhangi leads the Ugandan contingent for the Rwanda Mountain Gorilla rally.

It is the first time Uganda is sending such a huge team and Muhangi will be eager to score his first points on this season’s African Rally Championship (ARC) calendar.

Hajji Abdul Ssempebwa is the only other Ugandan driver eligible to score ARC points.

NRC contender Duncan Mubiru (below) will drive a Subaru N12 instead of his newly-acquired Subaru N16 but will not be driving to score point. Instead, he is gearing up for the Pearl of Africa Rally, which is scheduled for next month.

Local drivers namely Claude Kwizera, Burundian Abbas Mohammed, Ange Cyatangabo, Johhny Murengezi, Mayaka Felekani, Claude Gakwaya, Genesse Semana and Janvier Mutuga among others will be searching for National championship points.
