Rwanda’s inflation rate down to 1.4%

Rwanda’s consumer price index (inflation) increased by 1.4 percent in June 2014 compared to 3.7% in June 2013 and 1.9% during the month of May, a new report by the National Institute of Statistics Rwanda has indicated.

Rwanda’s consumer price index (inflation) increased by 1.4 percent in June 2014 compared to 3.7% in June 2013 and 1.9% during the month of May, a new report by the National Institute of Statistics Rwanda has indicated.

According to the report released yesterday, all Urban Consumer Price Index increased by 1.4 percent on annual basis and decreased by 0.5 percent on monthly basis.

The annual average rate between June 2014 and June 2013 registered was 3.4% compared to 3.6% last month. The increase was mainly attributed to the rising prices of ‘food and non-alcoholic beverages which registered 1.9 percent, education 7.1 percent and restaurants and hotels 7.8 percent.

The underlying inflation rate (excluding fresh food and energy) decreased by 0.6 percent when compared to May 2014 and increased by 2.0 percent when compared to June 2013.

The annual average underlying inflation rate is 3.3 percent Vegetables and transport dropped by 0.5 and 3.0 percent respectively during the month of June.

The Rwanda CPI increased by 4.5 percent on an annual basis, and decreased by 0.2 percent on a monthly basis.
