RESIGNED: William Ntidendereza

KIGALI - The Mayor of Kicukiro District, William Ntidendereza, resigned his duties last weekend, The New Times has learnt.

Ntidendereza was elected to head the district in the 2006 local government elections.

When contacted by phone, Ntidendereza confirmed he had resigned and said that the reasons for his resignation were personal.

According to the law, a Mayor hands in his resignation letter to the District Advisory Council which forwards a copy to the City Council and another to the local government ministry.

The City Council is supposed to respond confirming receipt of the letter not later than seven days.

When contacted by phone the chairman of the Kicukiro District Advisory Council, François Xavier Karekezi, said that he was aware of Ntidendereza’s resignation.

He said that the Advisory Council summoned Ntidendereza and asked him details of his resignation.

"He told us that he was going for another job,” explained Karekezi.

The Kicukiro district Advisory Council is composed of 21 members, each representing a Sector.

Asked whether the ministry is informed about Ntidendereza’s resignation, the Secretary General in the Ministry of Local Government, Eugene Barikana, said that he had also heard of it but had not received any formal communication.

Meanwhile, sources from the Kicukiro district administration said that the District’s Executive Secretary, Mediatrice Izabiriza, also recently resigned and they say both resignations are connected.

According to the law, Ntidendereza will be replaced within 90 days as the law governing Local government stipulates.
