GOVERNMENT IS set to build a modern national theatre valued at Rwf4 billion within the next two years.

The director Culture Promotion in the Ministry of Sports and Culture, Lauren Makuza said the plans to kick off the project have been finalised as Rwf4 billion has been earmarked for the entire project.

This development comes as a huge relief to the entertainment industry as lack of a standard theatre has been a big challenge for the industry. Currently artistes have to deal with the exorbitant venue charges to hold shows.

"Someone has to part with at least USD 2000 (Rwf1.4m) just to secure a venue for a single show,” says Arthur Nkusi, a standup Comedian.

Facilities that host big concerts include Remera Petit stadium and Gikondo Expo Grounds.

The national theatre will be constructed in Remera near Amahoro national stadium.  It will have a seating capacity of over 2000 people.
