EUPHORIA HAS never been the best friend of sanity in society. The World Cup is arguably the biggest test of the social façade as booze and frenzy team up with, lately, betting, to make the soccer extravaganza a long month to forget for many.

Families suffer a lot of differences during the World Cup. From the battle for remote control to differences in fanaticism, down to the absentee member, soccer’s biggest event is an enemy of the society in many ways.

But that can only stand if the people are foolish enough to make football frenzy drag their social life down the mire.

Whereas the time difference means the kick off times here would be late night affairs, it cannot be an excuse for soccer loving people failing to meet their domestic and other community obligations.

From the security of everyone around us, to the people in our homes, the World Cup is just a moment to savour and break some stress but not to shut the windows on the virtues of life.

The national broadcaster has brought the extravaganza to our living rooms. That means for those who feel they can only enjoy football when with a bottle in one hand, you can drink from home. It is called responsible enjoyment of the game.

If you are married, your wife will probably be happier if you invited a few bachelor friends than have you go out late in the night and returning when the birds are chirping.

For those who have turned sports into an avenue for minting money, betting is just a chance game. Only irresponsible people will spend their fortunes on teams that are even foreign to begin with.

At the end of the showpiece, it is just a game. The fulfillment is in your head and nothing more. Let’s be responsible and ensure that the society we cherish is free of crime and other disturbances.
