Are saunas harmful to health?

Dear doctor; I am a regular sauna and steam bath goer, but I keep hearing people say the excessive heat is bad for human health. What exactly could be wrong? Also, is a sauna as good as exercise for those who want to burn fats given that the goal is always to sweat for both aspects? Mili N. 51

Dear doctor;

I am a regular sauna and steam bath goer, but I keep hearing people say the excessive heat is bad for human health. What exactly could be wrong? Also, is a sauna as good as exercise for those who want to burn fats given that the goal is always to sweat for both aspects? Mili N. 51.

Dear Mili N,

Sauna and steam bath both are beneficial for the human body. The exposure to heat by different means relaxes the muscles, it provides relief in cases of rheumatoid arthritis, muscle cramps and  aches of different parts of body. It also cleanses the skin pores very well due to perspiration thus removing grime as well as toxins and germs. It also provides sense of relaxation thus helping people suffering from depression, anxiety, among other stress-related problems.

However, exposure to excess heat has health risks as well. If one is exposed to excess heat(more than the level tolerated by the body), there may be release of stress hormones causing rise in pulse rate and blood pressure. One can develop dryness of skin with accompanying itching after exposure to heat. Excess heat can cause dehydration due to removal of water as well as electrolytes from the body. This risk is more in those who take alcohol.

Sauna bath is not safe for those suffering from diabetes with high blood glucose levels, patients with hypertension and or cardiovascular problems. One can enjoy sauna but to the extent of feeling fresh and relaxed. If the heat feels much or one feels uncomfortable after sauna bath, it is better to reduce the duration and frequency.
