GABORONE – Rwanda U-18 girls’ volleyball team registered their second win in the Africa Youth Games following a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17 and 25-16) victory over South Africa yesterday.

The win took Paul Bitok’s team into second spot with 7 points, two behind leaders Nigeria, who have won all three matches played so far.

Egypt is third with six points in two matches played so far. Rwanda take on Mauritius today while Egypt will face South Africa and Kenya takes on hosts Botswana.

Tennis

Ernest Habiyambere registered a good start after defeating Simito Sibanda from Zimbabwe 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the tennis competition.

Olive Tuyisenge also won 7-5, 6-2 over Botswana’s Botho Tawana in the women category. Today, Habiyambere will be up against Pin Yong Tat of Mauritius and Tuyisenge will face Nicole Dzeya from Zimbabwe.

Boxing

By press time, boxer Jean Pierre Cyiza was vying for a place in the final at Botho University, while Rwanda lost 5-10 to Algeria in basketball 3*3.

Golf

Aaron Taylor Koonce is looking forward to a good performance in the three-day golf tournament which tees off today at the Gaborone Golf Club.

The 17-year-old, who had a chance to train at the club in early May before Rwanda came to Gaborone, is in good shape, according to head coach Jean Baptiste Hakizimana.  Koonce is a 2012 Rwanda Open Golf Champion in the amateur category.

Koonce is hopeful to finish with a medal for Rwanda but he knows that competition from Zambia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe will be tough as these are the strongest African nations in golf.

Taekwondo

Delphine Uwababyeyi is set to start her campaign in Taekwondo today, competing in U-44 female category.
