Girls’ under-18 v-ball team take on Kenya in opening game

GABARONE – THE Rwanda National U-18 girls’ volleyball team start their campaign against Kenya today in the Africa Youth Championship competition at Molepolole stadium.

The volleyball competition has attracted seven countries namely; hosts Botswana, Egypt, Mauritius, DR Congo, Rwanda, Kenya and South Africa.

The competition will be played on a round robin format.

Rwanda, who take on hosts Botswana tomorrow, will face South Africa on May 26 before playing Mauritius two days later.

On May 28, they will face neighbours DR Congo; have a rest on May 29 before locking horns against Egypt in the final match of the tournament on May 30.

Head coach Paul Bitok admitted it will not be a walk in the park especially the first three matches against Kenya, Botswana and South Africa.

Table Tennis

Assoumpta Isimbi Kamanda qualified to the next round of the table tennis tournament after securing a walk over against Libya in yesterday’s second game played at the Botswana National Youth Centre.

She lost the opening game to Algeria’s Sannah Lagsir 3-0 (5-11, 4-11 and 6-11). She was supposed to meet Libya's representatives but her opponent never showed up.

In the boy’s category, Francois Regis Ishimwe lost to Nigeria’s Ogini Olasunkammi 3-0 (3-11, 6-11, 4-11) in the first game but bounced back to beat Lorys Wakas of Central Africa Republic 3-0 11-5, 11-7 and 11-8.

Basketball

Rwanda U-18 basketball team face Nigeria and Mozambique in the opening matches of group B today. 

Coach Moise Mutokambali’s side start with Nigeria at 12pm before rounding off the day’s action against Mozambique at 2pm. 

The final group match will be on Sunday when Rwanda battles Algeria to determine, which teams head into the quarter-finals.

Group A: Egypt, Botswana, Mauritius, Zimbabwe and Angola, while Group B has Rwanda, Nigeria, Algeria, Mali and Mozambique.
