Musician Kizito Mihigo, who was arrested last week in connection with attempts to overthrow the government, will appear before court today afternoon.

Mihigo was arrested alongside three accomplices, Cassien Ntamuhanga, Agnes Niyibizi and Jean Paul Dukuzumuremyi, after police suspected them of hatching a plot to carry out terrorist activities across the country and attempting to overthrow the government using unconstitutional means.  

"The suspects will appear before Kacyiru Primary Court tomorrow (today) afternoon for pre-trial hearing. It’s there that the charges against them will be read out by the prosecutors,” prosecutor General Richard Muhumuza told The New Times.

Following the arrests, Assistant Commissioner of Police Theos Badege, the  Commissioner for Criminal Investigations Department (CID) told journalists during a news briefing that if found guilty, the suspects risk a jail sentence ranging from 15 to 25 years.

 When police paraded the suspects before the media, they all confessed to having conspired to overthrow the government using  violent means.

Part of the terror plot as revealed during the police investigations was to plant grenades at a key skyscraper in the capital and assassinate top politicians, officials within security organs and Members of Parliament.

Further police details emerged linking the suspects to the FDLR, a terrorist group based in DR Congo, and Rwanda National Congress (RNC), a South Africa-based organisation founded by Rwandan fugitives.

The two groups have been blamed for a series of grenade attacks around the country that have killed and injured many people.

Reports indicated that Kizito joined the cause to overthrow the government with hopes of securing a good position in government.
