Established in 2005 to incorporate the former Department of Statistics in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, the National Census Service, and the National Population Office, the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) has the mandate of providing relevant, reliable, coherent, timely and accessible statistical information and services to various sectors of the society in a coordinated and sustainable manner in the country.

NISR contributes towards national development through providing accurate data/ statistics that act as a baseline across all sectors. This data is then used by decision makers during policy formulation and debates; and favorable policies that contribute to the development and wellbeing of every Rwandan are developed. The statistics provided help to show progress as well as challenges that prompt government and development partners to respond effectively based on the need. This enables efforts of national development to be directed towards the most urgent priority areas.
