Former Rayon Sports defender Alphonse Gatera has been appointed the new assistant coach for Mukura Victory Sports on a one-year contract.

According to the club’s secretary general Olivier Mulindahabi, Gatera, a former Police FC assistant coach under former coach Goran Kopunovic, will work under Cedric Kaze and is expected to make his debut on the touchline in today’s league match against APR FC at Stade de Kigali.

"The team has struggled to reach its usual standards this season but we hope that both (Gatera and Kaze) can steer it back into the top six by the end the season,” Mulindahabi said on Thursday.

Mukura finished fifth last season but the Huye-based side has struggled, having won just five of their 18 league matches to remain in the bottom half of the table all season.

Mulindahabi confirmed that Canisius Nshimiyimana, who has been acting as the Keza’s assistant, will stay on as team manager.

During his playing days, Gatera played for Vital’O (Burundi), Rayon Sports, APR FC and Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa.
