Gatete told Times Sport yesterday in a phone interview that the army side is not in a rush to name a new head coach after the resignation of Andreas Spier last week.
"At the moment we don’t need a new coach because Mashami is doing a great job, we will continue to give him support,” Gatete said before adding: "The club (management) is under no pressure to bring in a new head coach, so we shall continue working with him (Mashami) as interim head coach until a decision is taken regarding the situation,” Gatete added.
Former Isonga FC coach Mashami, who was Spier’s assistant, has won his first two games in charge including a 1-0 win over fellow league title challengers Police FC and 4-1 against Gicumbi FC on Sunday which extended APR’s lead at the top of the table by six points.
Seeking a record-extending 14th league title, APR have 43 points in 18 matches, six points ahead of second-placed and reigning champions Rayon Sports, who however, have two games in hand due to their involvement in Caf Champions League over the past two weekends.
In other matches played on Sunday, Espoir succumbed to their second loss of the season after a 1-0 win for Musanze in Rusizi to drop to fourth place, while Kiyovu SC beat Amagaju 1-0 in Nyamagabe.
Gilbert Kanyankole’s side moved to third position with 32 points, level with Espoir but the former have a better goal difference, while Musanze remains in seventh position with 30 points.
Esperance moved from the bottom of the table for the first time this season after playing out a goalless draw against Mukura, while Marines registered a 1-0 win over archrivals Etincelles in an epic Rubavu derby at Umuganda stadium.
Marines jumped to tenth position with 13 points, while Esperance moved to 12th place with 11 points above AS Muhanga and Amagaju, dropped to the bottom following their home loss to Kiyovu.
