RWANDA NATIONAL Olympic Committee will start preparing national athletes in March, four months before the 2014 Commonwealth Games due in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 3.

This development was confirmed by the Games Chef de Mission Serge Mwambali on Thursday.

"At the end of this month, we will have identified athletes from different participating federations and the selected athletes will start camp on March 1,” Mwambali said before adding:

"So far we are planning to send 20 athletes and 10 officials to Glasgow. And we want them (athletes) to get proper training.”

Rwanda is planning to send athletes in cycling, judo, swimming, boxing, athletics and Para-sports.

Among all athletes lined up for Glasgow, veteran long distance runner Dieudonne Disi is the only one, who has stepped up preparations in Kenya’s Iten training centre.

Disi, who turns 34 years in November, has indicated his intention to win a medal in this year’s edition before he retires.

The Glasgow Games are likely to be his last major international championships and he hopes training from Kenya will boost his chances of quitting the sport on a high.

The former 10,000m national champion also said he plans to compete in different European marathon events between March and May before the Glasgow Games.
