A new day care and nursery school has opened its doors to the little ones in the Kacyiru suburb of Kigali. Ladybird Day care and Nursery admits children from a few months old to five years. The languages used or taught at the centre are English and French together with Kinyarwanda. According to one of the founders of the school, they have certified Montessori teachers from Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda to handle the children with each class having a teacher and an assistant. "We believe that if a child is with others then he/she stands a better chance of learning lots of things for their own development since children tend to have their own mutual communication and skills,” said Brian Kasawuli, an administrator and headmaster of the school. He also pointed out that hinted on the fact that pre-primary education in Rwanda is still not widespread yet scientists have proved that it is a crucial stage in one’s development. "Some parents think that taking a child to a nursery school is a waste of time yet this is the stage at which a child undergoes significant brain development,” he added. Montessori education is an educational approach developed by Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori and characterised by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical, and social development.
